Planning an overlanding adventure should be exciting, not complicated. To help you prepare for your trip into the Scandinavian wilderness, we’ve put together answers to the most common questions about our vehicles, the booking process, and what to expect on the road.

1. Booking, Payment & VIP Package, Arrival
Q: How much is the security deposit and when is the payment due?
A: The standard fully refundable security deposit is 2.000 €. However, if you book our VIP Package, the deposit is reduced to 1.000 €. Please ensure the deposit has cleared in our bank account before the vehicle handover. The final balance for your rental booking is due 14 days before your trip begins.
Q: What is included in the VIP Package? A: Our VIP Package is designed to give you maximum convenience and peace of mind during your adventure. It includes:
- Station Pick-up & Drop-off: You don’t need to worry about transportation; we will personally pick you up from the train station in Borlänge upon arrival and drop you off there after your trip.
- Reduced Financial Risk: Both your security deposit and your insurance deductible are reduced from 2.000 € to 1.000 €.
- Extended Insurance: The VIP Package fully covers one tire and rim (wheel) damage, as well as glass damage (which normally carries a 150 € deductible for standard bookings).
- Bonus Gear: We include a complete fishing set for free so you can fully enjoy the Scandinavian lakes.
Q: How do I get to your base in Dala-Järna?
A: Most of our international guests fly into Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN). From there, the journey is very straightforward:
- Standard Booking: Take a train directly from Arlanda Airport to Borlänge (approx. 2.5 hours). Right outside the Borlänge train station, you can catch a direct bus to Dala-Järna (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes). We highly recommend using omio.com to check schedules and book your tickets. If you need any help planning your route, just let us know – we are always happy to assist!
- VIP Package: If you booked our VIP Package, your journey is even easier. You simply take the train to Borlänge, and we will personally pick you up right from the platform and bring you to our base. After your trip, we will drop you off at the Borlänge station again.
2. Insurance & Breakdowns
Q: How does the insurance work and what is my deductible?
A: All our expedition vehicles come with comprehensive insurance, but the deductible (self-risk) depends on your chosen package:
- Standard Booking: The maximum deductible is 2.000 € per incident. There is also a 150 € deductible for glass damage. Tire and rim damage are not covered.
- VIP Package: The maximum deductible is reduced to 1.000 €, and both tire/rim and glass damage are fully covered.
- Important Exclusions: Please note that exterior attachments (such as the roof tent and awning) as well as loose camping equipment (like camping chairs, cooking gear) are not covered by the vehicle’s insurance. If these items are lost or damaged, the renter is responsible for the replacement costs.
Q: What happens if I have a breakdown in the wilderness?
A: We never leave you stranded. Every rental includes access to a 24/7 towing service. Additionally, we provide personal support—if a problem cannot be fixed over the phone or on the spot, we will personally come out with a trailer to rescue you and the vehicle, no matter where you are in Sweden.
3. Driving & Off-Road Rules
Q: Which countries am I allowed to travel to?
A: You are welcome to take our vehicles across borders to explore more of Scandinavia! Travel is fully permitted within Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark.
Q: Is there a mileage limit?
A: No! All our vehicles come with unlimited mileage. You are completely free to explore the vastness of Scandinavia without constantly checking the odometer.
Q: Can I take the vehicles off-roading?
A: Sweden offers endless, fantastic gravel roads and forest tracks that you can easily navigate with our vehicles. Please note: True cross-country off-roading off established paths (e.g., through bogs or deep into the woods) is strictly forbidden by law (Allemansrätten) and is heavily fined. Furthermore, damages caused by gross negligence (such as deep water crossings) will void your insurance coverage.
4. Equipment & Gear
Q: What is included in the vehicle?
A: Our rigs are “Ready for Adventure”. This means they come fully equipped with a premium roof tent, a complete camping kitchen (including gas cartridges), a fridge, and camping chairs and everything what you could need. You don’t have to worry about the basic hardware.
Q: How do I navigate in the wilderness?
A: Every vehicle is equipped with a complete offline navigation system. It comes pre-loaded with approximately 10.000 km of off-road tracks and hundreds of Points of Interest (POIs) like campsites, gas stations, and grocery stores. Because the system works entirely offline, you will always be able to navigate reliably, even in the most remote areas without cell reception.
Q: Do I need to bring my own sleeping bag?
A: We highly recommend and prefer that you bring your own sleeping bag for your personal comfort. However, if that is not possible for your trip, just let us know and we can provide sleeping bags for you.
5. Requirements & Legal
Q: What are the minimum age and driver’s license requirements?
A: The minimum age depends on the vehicle you choose:
- Jeep Cherokee XJ: Available to drivers starting at 18 years old.
- Ineos Grenadier & Land Rover Discovery: Drivers must be at least 21 years old. For all our vehicles, a standard European Class B car license (or international equivalent) is completely sufficient.
Q: Do I need previous 4×4 or overlanding experience?
A: No prior off-road experience is required! During the vehicle handover, we will give you a comprehensive introduction to the vehicle, the 4×4 systems, and the camping equipment. However, we expect you to drive responsibly and adapt your speed to the road conditions, especially on gravel.
6. On the Road
Q: Are there hazards like wild animals on the roads?
A: Yes, driving in Scandinavia means you share the area with wildlife. Moose and reindeer are very common and often cross roads unexpectedly. Please be extra vigilant and reduce your speed, especially during dawn and dusk, as well as on long stretches of forest roads.
Q: How do toll roads and congestion taxes work in Scandinavia?
A: All our vehicles are registered for automatic toll collection (e.g., city congestion taxes in Sweden or bridge tolls). We will simply deduct standard Swedish or Danish tolls from your security deposit. Important note for Norway: The Norwegian AutoPASS toll system often processes invoices very slowly. It can take up to 6 months for us to receive the final toll bill for your trip. In this case, we will forward the invoice to you for payment once it arrives.
Q: Will I have cell phone reception in the wilderness?
A: Sweden has excellent mobile network coverage, even in many remote areas. However, in deep forests or the northern mountains (Fjell), you may encounter dead zones. While our built-in offline navigation will keep you on track while driving, we still recommend downloading maps (like Google Maps) to your phone for offline use during hikes or exploring on foot.
7. Return & Policies
Q: What is the fuel policy?
A: We operate on a “full-to-full” basis. You will receive the vehicle with a full tank of fuel, and we ask that you return it with a full tank. If the tank is not full upon return, we will charge for the missing fuel plus a small refueling service fee.
Q: Do I need to clean the vehicle before returning it?
A: We take care of the main cleaning! Overlanding gets dirty, so you do not need to wash the exterior of the vehicle. We only ask that you return the interior in a “broom-clean” condition. This simply means all trash is removed, the fridge is emptied, and the cooking dishes are washed.
‘For us, it’s about more than travel — it’s about giving families the opportunity to experience the wild together, reconnect with nature and create memories that will stay with them forever.’
