Four tested tours from our base in Dala-Järna – on gravel and forest roads wherever possible.
From our base in Dala-Järna you reach Norway in 2–3 hours – with unlimited kilometres and a car built for gravel roads and fjell.
Our routes
15,000 km we have driven ourselves
Every line on this map is a track we have driven with our own cars – gravel roads, forest roads and quiet mountain passes in Sweden and Norway. The dots are places we like: viewpoints, camp spots, waterfalls and supplies.
Book a car and you get the tracks for the offline navigation in the car. Below are four tours we can recommend from experience – or we put a route together with you.
Driving off roads and tracks is not allowed in Sweden or Norway – our tracks follow legal gravel and forest roads. Where can I sleep? →

Border Trail – five days in the borderland
- 5 days
- ≈ 420 km + 200 km there and back
- May – October
The short escape, close to our base: from Sälen across the border into the forests of Norway and back along the Klarälven river to Malung – lakes, campfires and almost nobody else.
Highlights
- Start in the fjäll village of Sälen, about 1.5 hours from our base
- Across the border at Ljørdalen into Norway’s quiet forest country
- Gravel roads around Støa and the big Norwegian lakes
- Back into Sweden along the Klarälven valley near Branäs
- Lake camps with fire pits – perfect for a first rooftop-tent trip
Good to know: Good for a long weekend or as a first trip: about 80–120 km a day leaves plenty of time at camp. In May the evenings are already long and light, and the mosquitoes are usually not out yet.

Norway Gravel – fjells and fjords
- 7–10 days
- ≈ 1,000 km in Norway
- June – September
From Dala-Järna west across the border into Norway – on gravel roads up into the fjells, through Jotunheimen and down to the Sognefjord.
Highlights
- Peer Gynt-vegen near Gålå – a gravel mountain road with wide views
- Valdresflye and the lakes on the edge of Jotunheimen
- Gjende at Gjendesheim, Sjodalen and the high valleys around Lom
- Sognefjellet – one of the highest mountain passes in Northern Europe
- Down to the Sognefjord at Sogndal and back via Hemsedal
Good to know: Norway takes longer than the map suggests – plan fewer kilometres a day. Some mountain roads are small toll roads, and high passes like Sognefjellet open around late May. For Norwegian road tolls we keep a flat €50 from the deposit.

Vildmarksvägen Gravel – the Wilderness Road, almost without tarmac
- 10–12 days
- ≈ 1,000 km loop + 850 km there and back
- June – mid-October
The famous Wilderness Road between Jämtland and Lapland – but on gravel instead of tarmac wherever there is a way. Only over the Stekenjokk plateau is there no alternative to the road.
Highlights
- Gäddede and the Brakkåfallet waterfall
- Ankarede – an old Sámi church site by the lake
- Stekenjokk – a high plateau above the tree line, one of Sweden’s highest roads
- Klimpfjäll and the Sámi church village Fatmomakke
- Saxnäs and the Marsfjället mountains
- Borgafjäll and the lakes around Vilhelmina and Dorotea
Good to know: The road over Stekenjokk is closed in winter – this tour is for summer and early autumn. In midsummer the mosquitoes come along too; a Thermacell repeller is in every car.

Up North – the big tour to the Arctic Circle
- ≈ 3 weeks
- ≈ 3,300 km
- June – September
The big one: from Dalarna through Härjedalen and Jämtland deep into Lapland, across the Arctic Circle and to the edge of Sarek National Park – on gravel wherever possible.
Highlights
- The Vildmarksvägen as part of the route
- Sorsele, Arjeplog and the big lakes of Lapland
- Crossing the Arctic Circle near Jokkmokk
- Kvikkjokk – the end of the road at the edge of Sarek
- Storforsen – one of the biggest rapids in Europe
Good to know: For travellers with time: about 150–180 km a day, with days to stay put. Around midsummer it hardly gets dark this far north.
